Topics:  The different propaganda techniques used by advertisers and the use of propaganda in commercials and print media.

Students will use critical listening and viewing skills in various situations and for a variety of purposes.


Indicator 1: Students will use various listening and viewing strategies in social, academic, and occupational situations.

9-12 Benchmarks:

  1. analyze various cognitive and physical barriers to effective listening and viewing, e.g., prejudice, prior knowledge/experience.
  2. apply effective listening techniques for creative problem-solving and collaborative decision-making.
  3. analyze the impact of non-verbal cues used in interpersonal communication.

GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS

THE STUDENT WILL:

  1. evaluate how differing verbal cues affect the impact of the message, e.g., speaker’s diction, syntax, tone, rate, pitch, volume, quality.
  2. use interpersonal etiquette and maintain an open mind when listening and viewing.
  1. determine how the clarity and organization of communication can impact the meaning of a message.
  2. analyze how non-verbal communication can influence the believability and interpretation of the message, e.g., distracting behaviors or habits.
  3. analyze the use and effect of eye contact, facial expression, gestures, and posture.

 

Understandings:  Advertisers use a variety of methods to convince consumers to buy their products, and by becoming more familiar with these methods, students will understand how these methods influence them in making purchases.

 

Essential Questions:  How do advertisers get people to purchase their products? How can our knowledge of propaganda help us to become better consumers?  How will understanding techniques used in propaganda help students make more informed decisions as members of the community?

 

 

 

 

Knowledge & Skills: Students will recognize the different types of propaganda.  Students will understand the message of advertisers in commercials.  Students will be able to see through the advertiser’s message to make an informed decision on a product.

Learning Activities: Evaluation of commercials, make commercials for products, design an ad for a magazine, Power Point presentation, worksheets
